Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (3 MWHr VRFB) Storage at NETRA

Brief

Brief

NTPC has setup Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) system of 600 kW / 3 MWh, marking the country’s first MWh-scale flow battery deployment. This project is a major milestone toward long-duration energy storage (LDES) and supports NTPC’s vision of transforming NETRA into a Green Energy Campus, enabling large-scale renewable integration and self-reliant energy innovation.

Configuration

Configuration

Electrolyte: Vanadium in different oxidation states (V2+, V3+, VO2+, VO2+)

Salient Strength

Salient Strength
  • De-coupling of ‘Power’ & ‘Energy’:Independence in Scaleup,
  • Long Lifetime:>20,000 cycles
  • Cyclic degradation: almost nil
  • Low Fire / Explosion Risk:Aqueous electrolyte, so no thermal runaway
  • Recyclability: >99%, Significantly more compared to Li-ion,
  • High Depth of Discharge (DoD): ~95% DoD, unlike ~80% in BESS.
